Reverse advent calendar

St. Michael’s Reverse Advent Calendar focuses on the spirit of giving by incorporating daily giving and reflections during the Advent season. Each week during Advent, we will highlight an organization and their specific needs. Reusable blue bags are available in the Narthex to collect your donations during the week and bring to St. Michael’s where donation boxes will be set up outside the community room.

guatemala mission trip

Leader: Dave Evans  |

 guatemala mission 2019

Since June 2014, St. Michael's has generously supported Porch de Salomon in Panajachel, Guatemala. Porch de Salomon is a unique and progressive, non-profit ministry which has loved, served, and encouraged “the lost, the least, and the last” of Guatemala’s Lake Atitlan basin.

In 2016 and again in 2017, parishioners from St. Michael's Church, Barrington and St. Mark's Church, Barrington Hills, came together as ‘Team Chicago’, the first group from Illinois to serve at the mission. Our missioners were involved in indigenous home construction and also assisted with a medical clinic. In the past we have collected vitamins, over-the-counter medicines, and medical supplies to bring to Porch de Salomon to assist clinic efforts.

If you are looking for an experience or relationship that will challenge you, help start or stretch your faith, and draw you into something bigger than yourself, we welcome you to be a part of what God is doing through Porch de Salomon.

Food Drives & The Little Red Wagon

Leader: Dave Evans |

collage 3

Approximately once a quarter, we organize food drives in support of organizations and food pantries that provide meals or groceries to those in crisis. If you have items you would like to donate in between food drives please leave them in the Little Red Wagon, a long-time presence in St. Michael's narthex.  With many the number of families requiring assistance increasing, food pantries in the area are facing a rising crisis in that the need far exceeds the amount of food available.

If you are interested in volunteering to collect, sort, or deliver food, please reach out! Many hands might light work.

Prayer Shawl Ministry

Leader: Vicki Ridges  |

Day & Time: Last Thursday of each month @ 10:00 am - 12:00 pm

ministry fair tables 1 of 29 27

Location: St. Michael's Library

This ministry is a quiet one but has deepened spiritual connections as the members touch the lives of others and remind them that they are loved by God and wrapped in prayer.  Prayer shawls are given to individuals in our congregation, in our community and mailed to loved ones and strangers out-of-state.  Prayer shawls are given for all the circumstances of life where the tangible presence of God is needed.  The group is open to all knitters and crocheters, experienced or not!

Katy's Christmas Baskets

Leader:  Llora Wonder|  & Melissa Buckley|

Day & Time: Watch the Sword in October for information.

For over 20 years, Katy's Christmas Baskets matches parishoners with about 35 families from the Revive Center and Church of the Redeemer (Elgin) that need assistance during the holiday season. Adopt a family and help put presents under the Christmas tree and food on the holiday table. Families range is size and ages.

This ministry honors Katy Pepper, who coordinated our Christmas basket program for many years. We remember her kindness and generosity through our parish’s commitment to supporting less fortunate families during the Advent and Christmas season.

RENK PARTNERSHIP MINISTRY

Leaders:  Jackie Kraus| j

  Lynn & Forest Mayberry |

Day & Time: Meetings are called as needed.

Our ministry raises funds to help support Renk Theological College in South Sudan.

January 2019 marked the 21 year anniversary of St. Michael's covenant relationship with the Diocese of Renk in South Sudan.

A fragile foothold of peace has been established in South Sudan, and we are fortunate to have a direct, personal means of helping strengthen it by investing in Christian leadership development and the rebuilding of social structure in Renk. The Renk Theological College was built and supported by St. Michael's Church as a key part of the Diocese of Renk's strategic plan for reweaving the social and economic fabric of the region so that peace can be maintained. The college chapel is called St. Michael's.

The Diocese of Renk has assumed primary responsibility for education in the region at all levels, and the College is committed to providing not only trained clergy but also skilled community leaders who can help foster sustainable social and economic development and thereby "lead the peace."
