Adult Formation on Sunday

Sunday’s, November 26 to December 17, 9:15 to 9:45 a.m. in the Conference Room.

Join us as we explore some of the writings by John of the Cross. Each week, we will look at a different poem or prose passage, and discuss what it means and how it applies to our lives today. Facilitator - Curate Lisa Erdeljon.

John of the Cross is a Medieval theologian and priest-a Doctor of the Church-whom scholars classify as a Mystic. He was a prolific writer, and a lot of his work is still available for reading and studying. Perhaps his most famous piece, The Dark Night of the Soul, deals with “the needs of souls struggling with inner trials.” Drawing from his knowledge of theology, psychology, and spiritual direction, John of the Cross “wanted everyone to find comfort in the thought that however severe it may be, purification is still the work of God’s gentle hand, clearing away the debris of attachment and making room for the divine light.”

As we face the literal darkness of these long winter nights, and the darkness of Advent Season-a season of fear and the unknown Biblically, and a season of anxiety and constant “to-do” lists in daily life-perhaps we can find some comfort in the words of John of the Cross.

All are welcome!
